What is Beyond Organic Farm?
Beyond Organic is a simple term taken from the clever vocabulary of Michael Pollan. To go Beyond Organic means to farm in a manner that strives for something more than just meeting the organic standards set forth by the USDA, it means more than just providing organically certified produce.
Going Beyond Organic means that we as farmers strive to grow healthy crops in a fully sustainable agricultural system, both for the future longevity of our community and for the longevity of our mother earth.
Being part of the Beyond Organic Community means consciously recognizing and addressing the issues surrounding the sustainability (or rather the lack thereof) of our local food system. This includes, but is not limited to, issues of food transportation, factory farming, feedlots, health, food security, and food inequities (social justice issues).
There are organic factory farms, there are organic feedlots, and organic food is imported from over seas every day. There are farms out there that wish to use the term Organic solely as a tool for profit, thus we decided to title out farm “Beyond” Organic to show our dedication for much more than selfish profit. We wish to take farming back to its roots, roots buried deep in the local soils, local waters, and local communities that make up Boulder.
Beyond Organic Farm grows crops without the use of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides or fungicides. Instead we rely on naturally produced fertilizers such as manure and compost and organic pest management. This includes predatory insects, biological controls, botanical products and companion planting, all of which have minimal negative impacts on the environment.
